Protect Yourself

A number of up.net members have received email asking for personal information. The email sounded good, Unfortunately the email wasn't legitimate, it was a form of phishing

Phishing is when a thief will send you an email impersonating a real company or person in the hopes of getting you to give them your personal information, passwords, or credit card numbers.

Some tips:
* If you receive an unexpected e-mail saying your account will be shut down unless you confirm your billing information, do not reply or click any links in the e-mail body.

* Before submitting financial information through a Web site, look for the "lock" icon on the browser's status bar. It means your information is secure during transmission.

* If you are uncertain about the information, contact the company through an address or telephone number you know to be genuine.

* If you unknowingly supplied personal or financial information, contact your bank and credit card company immediately.

If you suspect an email isn't legitimate click on "report as spam".

Remember: we at up.net will never never send email asking for personal information.

On April 1, 2009 the dreaded Conficker Worm is expected to do ... something. No one knows what but on April 1 infected computers are instructed to download instructions.

Read the Microsoft Security Bulletin, then read this article on how to protect your computer, then download the Malicious Software Removal Tool to check your computer.

Your Windows computer may be infected and you wouldn't even know, please check your computer.

Conficker is so bad Microsoft is offering a US$250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) who created Conficker.

Anyone using Ubuntu instead of Windows need not worry, Ubuntu is virus-free.

Check your computer for Conficker:
